Warning: The following fakies are spoilerish in nature!
The "Unbreakable" Series Title Page
Version five, and the current incarnation of the series title page, with color scheme to match the new site layout. The B/G fakie is a cutout from a group shot that I made for season finale of Virtualunatics' Virtual Season 8. The full version of the group shot can be found here.
Series title page version four, showing Buffy and Giles in a clinch, kissing. Simple, but effectively sets the romantic tone of the series. [This kiss was adapted from an illustration in part 7.]
This is the third incarnation of the series title page. Buffy and Giles are portrayed in a playful yet loving embrace, while Glory looms large in the shadows behind them--relevant of the way their lives are overshadowed by a destiny beyond their control.
The second incarnation of the title pic, with a decidedly sexier feel! Suggestions of impropriety within the Magic Box after hours prompted me to change it after just a few weeks!
The original version of the title page I did for my series, made from probably the shippiest stock shot of Buffy and Giles ever taken.
"Rencontre" Part 1
Buffy and the two men who love her. Part 1 saw Buffy confused by the nature of her relationships with Giles and Riley. While one was sparking in new, previously unconsidered directions, the other was dying from a flame to a cold ember. In this fakie, her head comes from a shot with Dracula, and her body is from a S5 promo. Her expression is meant to portray her indecision.
"Unbreakable" Part 2
Although not a fakie, this pic from the actual episode successfully captures the Buffy and Giles relationship as I portrayed it to a 'T'. I always wondered why, with the entire expanse of the dining room table at their disposal, they chose to sit so intimately close in one corner.
"Of Protocol & Tradition" Part 3
Quentin Travers and a Watcher's Council delegation came to town in this part, and quickly established themselves as a roadblock in Buffy and Giles' fledgling lovelife. This pic literally portrays the Council as the obstacle between Buffy and Giles. Buffy was faked in on a widescreen shot from the ep. Watcher Nigel was also faked in.
"Ties That Bind" Part 4
The title shot is a composite from two pics from the beginning of the episode. Interesting to note is the ring on Buffy's correct finger, which is not faked. While I know it's not really Giles' ring she's wearing, with little imagination it very well could be, which fit perfectly with my plot! Thanks Joss!
A shot from Buffy's birthday party that did not make it into the illustrated version of the fic. You're seeing it here for the first time!
This fakie shows Giles sliding Buffy's belated wedding ring on her finger, made from a collection of shots cut and pasted into one. Giles' jacket was made from dozens of small snippets, then reconstructed to give him the right body position. The 'hands' pic comes from a stock wedding photo.
Hardly faked. Since Giles was added to the written scene, he was also added into this pic behind Buffy and Joyce. The photo of him came from the same episode so that his clothes matched.
Completely faked. Although taken from the same episode to match clothing, Buffy and Dawn were originally alone in this pic. Giles was across the room picking up Willow. Both were manipulated, then cut and pasted into one.
"Crushed" Part 5
The shot of Giles came from another ASH series called "Manchild", although the head and body were from two different episodes. Xander and Anya were cut from behind Spike, and a crowd added instead, establishing the love/hate triangle between the three characters.
"Picture of You" Part 6
Happy Buffy, with daydreams of the mans she loves in the background--faked of course from several sources. The locket around her neck is also faked, and is consequentally featured in a lot of fakies following.
While this pic in itself is not a fakie, the wedding ring on Giles' finger is!
This car scene came from "Real Me". I just darkened the sky to simulate 'night', added a few stars, and gave the whole thing a bluish moonlight sheen. Oh, and I remembered to removed Buffy's sunglasses!
Again, the only thing fake in this pic is Giles' wedding ring!
"In This Life" Part 7
This pic of Buffy from the episode eloquently portrays her horror at discovering her mother's body. In the background, Joyce fades to another plane.
My alternative title pic. I decided against using it, in favor of the above.
The only thing fake here is Buffy's locket chain. I have in my head to do this shot in reverse, ie: Buffy's back and Giles' face. Now I just need to construct it!
Again, the only thing faked in this photo is Buffy's heart-shaped locket.
Other shots taken from the episode, to maintain continuity with clothes and hairstyles, were cut and pasted together to form this scene. Giles was taken from "Tabula Rasa", in which he wore the same outfit. The background shot was constructed from several shots for an empty widescreen view, then darkened to portray night, as per the fic scene.
Giles from "Tabula Rasa" again, just before he kissed Anya. Buffy was constructed from many different shots, then clothed and given the correct hairstyle in keeping with the episode.
This shot falls in sequence to the previous one. Again, Giles is from "Tabula Rasa" (kissing Anya) and Buffy came from an episode where she was kissing Riley. Again, her clothes and hairstyle were reconstructed for continuity.
An updated 'morning after' shot, clothing to match the text of the story. Giles is from ASH's other series "Manchild", manipulated into the correct posture. Buffy is from "Goodbye Iowa," her 'sushi' pjs turned into cow spots. The bedroom background is the master bedroom as seen in Season 7's "First Date."
"Evergreen" Part 8
This is the title pic for this part, with Buffy, Dawn, and Giles in black and white, overlaid on a photo of Joyce's casket. It's very similar to a composite shot that appeared in the episode, but that was all in color.
Here, Buffy is from "Normal Again", although her hairstyle and her cow-spot pajamas are hand painted for continuity. Giles is from another ASH series "Spooks". His t-shirt has been recolored, and his arm has been moved to her shoulder. The background is a compliation of the Summers' bathroom as seen in "Touched." Her wedding ring and the chain in his hand are also added on.
The base pic for the hug is Buffy and Riley from "Into The Woods" (I think). Buffy's face and gloomy expression comes from "Forever" and Giles' is from a S5 pic. Riley's blue shirt was recolored and the buttons for the henley added to match the story. The background is a shot from "Tabula Rasa."
Giles and Buffy's dad. Hank, is a compliation. The head shot is from "Normal Again," his suit is actually one of Giles' recolored, and with some hand painting to fill in the gaps. Giles is also a compliation--his face, suit, and shirt & tie all come from different shots (he wore this shirt & tie to the funeral in "Forever"). The background originally showed Willow and Buffy sitting on the Summers' couch.
This was a magazine shot of a couple in bed. Buffy's face comes from "Touched", Giles' is from "Weight of the World." Her body was in the scan, but his is a compliation made from various bits and pieces. |
"Precipice" Part 9
In this title pic, Giles inner thoughts are reflected in black and white background images, representative of the precarious balance between his duty as Watcher and his love for Buffy.
This was to have been a simple fakie/merge of two screengrabs: Buffy from a S6 epsiode (don't recall which one, but she was talking to Dawn) and Giles from "Life Serial." Trouble was, to match the text I had to make Buffy's black pants into blue jeans, and take her shoes off! I also removed the check from Giles hands and added the flowers to Buffy's arms.
This car shot from "The Replacement" originally featured Riley and Buffy. It was completely reconstructed with the exception of Buffy's face. Both Buffy and Giles were 'dressed' for continuity, and I ended up adding some 'car background' from their jaunt in "Real Me" because the original had no backseat to fill up the frame.
This screengrab from "The I in Team" was of Buffy and Riley making love. I flipped the shot because I wanted Giles' left hand showing. Giles' face is from another ASH show called "Manchild." Riley's arms and hands were broadened and retouched befitting Giles' physique, and the wedding ring added.
The look of love. Another screengrab from "The I in Team," originally of Buffy and Riley, now showing the intensity of Buffy and Giles' love for each other.
The kiss. "The I in Team" again, falling in sequence to the previous shot. Giles screengrab from "Manchild." You know, I think I may have gone overboard with this scene! J
Meeting the Buffybot. Giles is a reconstruction of several shots from various episodes, for body language, with some hand painting to bring it all together. Then he was added behind Buffy in this screengrab in the Summers' living room.
Giles was added into this episode screengrab in Spike's crypt. He was constructed from several screengrabs for the right expression, stance, clothing, and shadowing to match Buffy. The legs of his jeans from the thigh down are mostly hand-painted on. Originally, I planned to use either this shot or the preceeding one because they were so similar (ie: Giles added to the shot behind Buffy's shoulder), but I ended up using both.
"Mums & Dads" Part 10
In this title pic, Buffy and Giles are called before Dawn's school principal. All three characters are screengrabs from the episode. Buffy and Dawn's chairs were cut out and shuffled to make room for Giles. He was placed in a chair beside Buffy. The background was reconstructed from several shots of the principal's office. The 'holding hands' comes from a stock photo, recolored to match.
This shot is a composite from several from the actual episode. Practically every part of Buffy and Giles was individually manipulated into the correct posture to match the scene. |
Another multi-composite shot. Buffy's head (hair style) is from the episode, but her body is from an earlier one with Riley ("Who Are You?"). Giles' prone figure comes from "Hush," although it is actually several shots from the episode combined together in order to cut out Olivia and some of the dark shadows to better match the story text.
"Freefalling" Part 11
This title pic features a memorable scene from "Spiral" with Glory added to the background.
My alternative title pic for this part, using a couple of B/G fakies and shots from the episode. I eventually decided this one was 'too crowded' and instead used title #1.
"When the World Was Mine" Part 12
The three framed photographs in this title pic sit on Buffy's bedroom dresser. They show her happily married parents, herself, Giles, and their three-year-old son, and her high school graduate sister. Sound too perfect? It is. The 'normal life' she's escaped into is all inside her head.
"Child of Destiny" Part 13
Buffy and Giles just can't get a break (at least not with me writing them!). In this title pic, these screenshots from the episode show them estranged again. The background, rendered in black and white, shows Dawn awaiting certain death at top of Glory's tower, with a screenshot of the opened portal superimposed on top of her.
Check back from time to time, as I will be adding more when I get inspired!
